Stephen Penneck nominated as new ISI president-elect

RSS fellow and current chair of the RSS National Statistics Advisory Group, Stephen Penneck, has been nominated as the next president-elect of the International Statistical Institute (ISI).

Stephen is currently ISI vice president and is the sole nominee for the next president-elect role. If uncontested, he will begin his tenure as president-elect in 2019, taking on the presidency in 2021 when he will replace John Bailer.

Council meeting, June 2018

Council, the trustees of the Royal Statistical Society, met on 27 June for the second time in 2018. The annual accounts for 2017 were approved as well as an inflationary increase in membership fees. Both of these matters will go to the Society’s AGM in September.

Council approved the formation of a new Data Ethics Special Interest Group. The chair will be Peter Elias, and the group plans to engage with topics such as the role of data trusts, data stewardship responsibilities, privacy commission structures and other emerging issues.

Winners of Stats Excellence in the Pharma Industry award 2018

We are delighted to announce two winners for the 2018 Statistical Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Industry Award. For this year, both Dr Mouna Akacha, senior director at Novartis, and Dr Simon Bate, statistics leader at GlaxoSmithKline, have been awarded for their contributions to the pharmaceutical industry.

The award is jointly organised by the Royal Statistical Society and PSI - the member organisation for statisticians in the pharmaceutical industry - and recognises influential examples of the application of an existing statistical practice, or the implementation of an innovative statistical practice, in the industry.
