2018 International Prize in Statistics awarded to Bradley Efron

The statistical equivalent of the Nobel Prize has been awarded to RSS fellow Bradley Efron, professor of statistics and biomedical data science at Stanford University.

Bradley was awarded the prize for the creation of the ‘bootstrap’, a method he developed in 1977 for assessing the uncertainty of scientific results. The method has had an extraordinary impact across many scientific fields and transformed science’s ability to use and understand data. It’s also helped usher in a new era of data analysis through computing.

New editors for JRSS Series A and C

Following completion of Harvey Goldstein’s term of office at the end of this year, his successor as Joint Editor of Series A of the journals will be Professor Jouni Kuha.

Before joining the London School of Economics and Political Science, Jouni was a postdoctoral researcher at Nuffield College, Oxford, and assistant professor of statistics at Pennsylvania State University. He completed a master’s degree in statistics at the University of Helsinki in 1992, and his doctorate in social statistics at the University of Southampton in 1996.

RSS fellow commended in Science Council CPD Awards

Congratulations to RSS fellow Kim Cocks, both a Chartered Statistician (CStat) and Chartered Scientist (CSci), who was highly commended in last week’s annual Science Council CPD Awards.

The awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate the continuing professional development (CPD) achievements of registrants on the four Science Council registers: Registered Science Technician (RSciTech), Registered Scientist (RSci), Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach) or CSci.

Joyce Fienberg killed in Pittsburg synagogue shooting

We are shocked and saddened to learn that Joyce Fienberg, the widow of RSS fellow Steve Fienberg, was killed in the recent terrible synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh.

Steve Fienberg, who died on 14 December, 2016, aged 74 years, was a longstanding RSS fellow who made outstanding contributions to statistics as professor of statistics and social science at Carnegie Mellon University. He was a well-known figure in statistics and many who knew him also knew Joyce, who was a researcher at the University of Pittsburg and who spoke at a memorial event for Steve at this year’s Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver.
