Significance February 2019 issue

The sinking of the Titanic has inspired books, movies and documentaries. But it has also motivated data visualisation designers to tell the story of the tragedy in new ways, using a variety of graphical methods. In the February 2019 issue of Significance, out now in digital formats, our cover story reviews the first graph of the disaster and some recent developments.

We also look back over 70 years of Academy Awards to analyse speech lengths and ceremony runtimes since 1942, and we explore the historical context that led RA Fisher to propose his celebrated ’random idea’.

Stats excellence in the pharmaceutical industry award launched

Nominations are being sought for the 2019 Award for Statistical Excellence in the Pharmaceutical Industry, jointly run by the RSS and Statisticians in the Pharmaceutical Industry (PSI). The award recognises a most influential example of the application of an existing statistical practice, or the implementation of an innovative statistical practice, in the pharmaceutical industry.

Nominees can be based anywhere in the world and do not need to be a member of PSI or the RSS. The award will be presented at the Annual PSI Conference which is held in London, 2-5 June 2019.

RSS membership now exceeds 10,000

The RSS is celebrating the increase in membership which broke through the 10,000 figure at the start of this year.

Our growing community includes 6,000 designated ‘fellows’ as well as our free e-categories that includes students and teacher members.

RSS identifies challenges ahead for government statistics in inquiry

The Society’s National Statistics Advisory Group has contributed ideas on how to improve UK’s statistical system going forward, in a consultation response to a government select committee.

The Society contributed to the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (PACAC) inquiry on the governance of statistics, both via a written consultation response (PDF) and in person when our executive director Hetan Shah (pictured) gave evidence to the committee on February 5 2019, along with RSS vice president Guy Nason (in his capacity as professor of statistics at the University of Bristol).

Peter Mueller to be keynote speaker at RSS 2019 Conference

The organisers of this year’s RSS International Conference have announced that Peter Mueller will give the Methods & Theory keynote talk in Belfast this September.

Peter is a professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science and Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas in Austin. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Society for Bayesian Analysis.
