New review on improving knowledge exchange in maths sciences

A new review into knowledge exchange (KE) in mathematical sciences recommends that an Academy for Mathematical Sciences should be established in order to facilitate such exchanges between academia, government and industry.

The Bond Review, conducted by an independent group headed by Professor Philip Bond, says the new academy should act as a focal point and draw on the expertise of the already existing learned societies.

Draft programme unveiled for RSS 2018 Conference

The draft programme for this year’s RSS Conference has now been published. It includes the scheduling of the 55 invited sessions across nine topic streams that have been accepted for the conference, plus the programme of professional development workshops that run throughout the conference.

In addition, there will be no fewer than seven keynote speaker sessions including the opening evening session with National Statistician John Pullinger, the Significance lecture with Hannah Fry and a RSS Discussion Meeting on the topic of ‘Data visualisation’.

New Lords report on AI calls for ‘ethics code’

The House of Lords’ Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence has this week published a report, AI in the UK: ready, willing and able? (PDF).

The report concludes that the UK is in a strong position to be a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), and that the best way to do this is to put ethics at the centre of AI’s development and use.

RSS statement regarding Puerto Rico's Institute of Statistics

The RSS has issued a statement (PDF) in response to proposals to dismantle Puerto Rico’s independent statistical agency, ‘El Instituto de Estadísticas de Puerto Rico’ (Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics - PRIS).

The plans will - if necessary enabling legislation is passed - see the Institute become part of the government’s Department of Economic Development, which would then outsource statistical work to the private sector.

RSS Conference heads to Belfast in 2019

Belfast has been announced as the venue for the Society’s Conference in 2019. The event will take place at the Belfast Waterfront from 2-5 September 2019. It will be the first time the conference has been in Northern Ireland since 2006.

Lisa McFetridge from Queen’s University Belfast has been appointed as the programme chair for the conference and is looking forward to welcoming the Society to Northern Ireland: ‘I’m thrilled that the RSS Conference is coming back to Belfast. I’m excited to show off the many exciting changes our city has gone through since many of you were last here. Come and see why at the moment it is rated Lonely Planet’s number one region to visit!’

Record number of submissions for RSS 2018 Conference

Following the close of submissions earlier this month for contributed talks for this year’s RSS Conference we can reveal that there have been a record number of abstracts received. Submissions have surpassed the 250 mark for the first time ever and the total will be much higher, with the deadline for poster submissions not closing until June.

Following the record breaking number of attendees at last year’s conference – exceeding 600 for the first time – this year’s event in Cardiff promises to be even bigger.

Purdah guidelines changed to not restrict 'independent' comment

The RSS welcomes new guidance around the conduct of civil servants in the pre-election period (also known as ‘purdah’) which now clarifies that this should not restrict commentary from independent sources such as academics.
